STICKY Interview: T3 (Slum Village)

Last Friday, September 25th in Los Angeles @ The Conga Room Live Infusion Music Concert performed Slum Village and Goapele along with other featured guest. Before the show J.P. from (sinninginla.com) and I got a chance to catch up with T3 of Slum Village to talk about the new album "Villa Manfiesto," the upcoming J Dilla album, and what it's like to continue on after the loss of J Dilla and Baatin.

INTERVIEW BY J.P.

Ah yes, Detroit city! When you think of the city of Detroit you think of so many icons; Icons such as Motown, Ford, and of course SLUM VILLAGE! I got to sit down with the eclectic Hip-Hop groups "Ironman" T3. The Hip-Hop veteran conversed about many things from why Slum Village is still going strong in the game, the loss of two of the founders of Slum Village, as well as that it was like to work with new producer such as the Madlib (Mind Altering Demented Lessons In Beats).

J.P.: As the group continues to change, how are you able to keep a sound that is pleasing to you, and at the same time pleasing to your dedicated fans?
T3: Um yeah… That’s a deep question. There are a lot of different reasons why I choose to keep Slum Village (SV) going. Since I’ve been around for so long I’ve seen a lot of great groups disappear like A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde. Well maybe not The Pharcyde, they have a more on again, off again type of thing going on, I guess they got back together. Being that SV is from the city of Detroit I feel that were the pioneers of Hip-Hop coming out of the Mid-West. I also felt that I had to keep SV alive even with the passing of Baatin and Dilla it was tough, but I’ve always felt as if I could walk away from this (Slum Village). Even now I feel like this (Villa Manifesto) could very well be the last SV album that drops ever. That’s why we’ve been taking so much time with the album. Sometime I would look within and I’d prey on it, and to me Dilla would have told me to keep doing it. I’ve been keeping SV going, and it has taken a lot. Not in the way that it’s been a problem… but it’s not easy!

J.P.: What artist would Slum Village most want to collaborate with?
T3: Me personally I would not want to do the obvious and work with another rapper, I would want to push it. I would want to work with Prince; he’s one of the greatest. I would have even loved to work with Mike (Michael Joseph Jackson), God rest his soul. But I would have just wanted to work with someone who would have changed my whole way of thinking, about music. I must say that one of the greatest performers that SV has had the chance to work with was D’Angelo. D’Angelo is one of the most incredible dudes, to me.

J.P.: I’ve heard a few things about D’Angelo; like he’s due out with a new album sometime soon.
T3: [Laughing] Yeah, we’ve been hearing that for a while now! But I really hope that its true.

J.P.: Will fans be able to see a more fun side of SV, like in the 80’s skit on Trinity?
T3: Well yeah, the video that we released for our track “Acting Normal” was a skit. That’s really comedy, that’s not even a real song. As far as the video goes for “Acting Normal” something told me that we should do the video first, to reintroduce Baatin into the group. We had no idea that when we shot that video it would be the last time that we would see Baatin. I’m happy that I went with my instincts. For that video Elzhi and I came out of our own pocket, just to have something to reintroduce Baatin before all of the legal stuff got involved.

J.P: As a fan I want to know, just like I’m sure all of your other fans want to know. What are you listening to right now?
T3: As of now, I’m listening to a lot of different beats. Also a lot of 70’s prog-rock (progressive rock), some old soul records, you know then I’ll put a few Hip-Hop joints on.

J.P.: Does the group plan to do any tributes to their fallen comrades (Baatin & J Dilla)?
T3: Yes! We have a whole Dilla album that we’ve been trying to get out for a long while now. We’re just waiting on a lot of legal stuff to clear up. So yeah when it comes out it would be more of a tribute album. As for Baatin, I don’t know yet. We plan to drop Baatin’s solo album which is called “Uno Zero” that he did before his untimely passing. We’re still working on freaking the beats on his album though.

J.P.: On the new album Villa Manifesto, SV works with producer Madlib for the very first time. What was it like working with Madlib?
T3: To be honest working with Madlib is something that I’ve never been use to, he is more like a ghost. Till this DAY I’ve never even met Madlib. You’ll just get a package from him with a Zillion beats. From what I hear he is just in the studio 90% of the time working on beats, and sending them out. He sent us (Slum Village) a draft with like a million beats on it, and we only picked one for the new album. I feel that there is a connection between Madlib and Dilla. I feel as if he and I have the same ear for music, and I’ve always felt his music.

J.P.: In a way you’re like the Bret Favre of SV, you’ve been through it all and have seen it all; you’re the Ironman. How does that make you feel?
T3: You know, I don’t really know. Just like everyone else I have my good days as well as my bad days, but I really try to stay positive and focused on what would they do if they (J Dilla and Baatin) were still here in my position. Hopefully if they were they would do what I’m doing and keep things moving.

Vlooper - Neon Blaster Venus (Download)

[click on artwork for download]

As I sit back in my headphones listening to the latest Vlooper project "Neon Blaster Venus." My mind has began to descend on a journey through sound away from this planet. I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. In a zone without any interruption or set times...a light vacation.

Words from Vlooper:
My artist name is Vlooper
, I'm based in Montreal city (Quebec) and come from the francophone part of Canada that has been fighting for sovereignty over the last centuries...
We fight over the English crown period.

I do music as for the love of it between 40H/W slavery work and revolutionary projects that I do with my wife. My affiliations are Kenlo (my brother) and Homeless Royalty (my group mates are from Cali). We have this sovereign artistic tea shop (literally) here in Montreal that serves as refugee camp for artists of whatever form called Ociel (heather).

STICKY Spotlight: ill@DELphsouL

ill@DELphsouL BIO: A San Francisco Bay Area resident, that has been creating artistically for over 20 years. As an artist, illustrator, painter, graphic designer and a photographer
he exhibits how the calligraphic strokes of his mind meet his canvas of life.
Influenced by edgy and passionate painters such as Frank Morrison, Justin Bua,
Sam Flores, and Audrey Kawasaki; he has created an identity that allows his
imagination to enter the spirit of his viewer and fuse with the souL. Graduating
from The Academy of Art University San Francisco with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts in Illustration and Graphic Design he says "I believe in the healing
power of the arts and the potential for growth in creative engagement,
reminding myself everyday that I don't live my life; I create it and
paint it through my
experiences." Explains ill@DELphsouL.

ll@DELphsouL's work has been shown at Rocket 3, Millennium, The Academy of Art
San Francisco Spring Show, as well as The City of Ink in Atlanta to name a few. For the past
10 years you may have also experienced his work walking past you on the street.
He has worked with such clothing companies as LRG (Lifted Research Group), Franco Shade, as well as Triumvir 3. Creating t-shirt designs as well as press and web advertisements. Many critics are moved by the expressive vigor in his works and see him as a artist of great promise in the years to come. For those that have already begun to collect his work, we finish in this moment within the depths of this artist....

"My life is dedicated to displaying new methods of thought through
artistic creation!"

The artistic journey has only just begun...
My name is Cordell Ross... first and foremost I am an artist. I
believe in the healing power of the arts and the potential for growth
in creative engagement. I love the trance like feeling I get when I'm
creating. That is the way I call on my soul. When I create, I am my
crazy self and without any inhibition...... I become ME. I love to
explore my psychological, spiritual and emotional development through
drawing, painting and writing. I remind myself everyday that I don't
live my life; I create it and paint it through my experiences. I also
enjoy finding the potential for activism through art. The creative
process offers so much hope and consciousness to the ones that engage
in the artistic journey. Yes, I am a dreamer, a little crazy and
definitely very passionate. I want to be able to explore and live my
life with great tenacity. I want to feel alive every day and grow
mentally, emotionally and spiritually with each experience and person
I meet. I believe that we can always learn something from others and
whether that is good or bad, it is our choice. I am also a optimist,
and what that means is that I believe in the loving possibility that
things could be better for everyone only if we dared to challenge the
misguided "convictions" we have been fed about our nature as human
beings.

Latest project I worked on was in creating the CD and LP artwork and
layout for recording artist Georgia Anne Muldrow and AnimatedCarTunes
the record lable based out of Brooklyn, NY. Soon to drop on November
11th.

I've known nothing else in my life that amounts to the feeling I get
inside while exploring the depths of my mind and creating
artistically. Kind of like when I feel in love with hip hop..... I
knew this would be a part of my life to the end. Music is a major
influence in my life in general, but when it comes to my work.... its
the easiest way to describe the flow and peace I feel when I create. I
have so many dreams that are based within my ability to create....
ART, MUSIC, FASHION, Life.... People watching, Photography, anything
to add to the picture reel.... otherwise none as my mind, allowing my
creativity to continuously flow! Always do what you love and love what
you do.... For this, Art is my passion and souL in life. To know that
is to know me. Everyday.. awakened by a creative thought...... my
calligraphic stokes will provoke until brought to a sense of
reality......

OBJEKTIV ONE - Producer, Designer, & Record Fiend

BIO: ... Out of the desolate wastelands of strip malls arises Objektiv One, an abstract hip hop producer who bridges the gap between pulp fiction and rhythm to create nebulous textures of sound that immerse the listener. Objektiv One's music begins with the deconstruction of many elements of sound which are then reshaped and remolded into entirely unique soundscapes that have new and unusual physiques. The end result is a cadence of sound that makes the user float into an ethereal world.

Objektiv One released his first solo mixtape "Oscillations" in 2008. Currently he is working on an untitled album which will be released on Outbox Records out of Reno, NV. [via myspace]

http://www.objektivone.com/

This is the first single "Capuletgo, Please!" off the upcoming untitled project. The track is available free to download with cover art work. When I heard this track tonight I just wanted to get my mack stroll on, seriously! A cruise down the highway with the top down and the music blasting. Very nice track, REFRESHING with hints of jazz, bluesy vocals, and a kickin' bass.

Yesterday The Blueprint 3 Outtakes arranged and produced by Alex Goose was available to listen. NOW today you can download the music along with the artwork HERE.

"In the spring of 2009, an A&R affiliated with the Roc got in contact with me. Shortly after, I had the opportunity to submit various tracks for Jay-Z's long awaited "Blueprint 3" album. Unfortunately. none of them made the final cut. After letting people hear what I sent Hova (including people who know him), they all suggested I release them for the public to hear. This is what the Blueprint 3 could have been..." - Alex Goose

Friday night I had a chance to visit my Truthseekers Radio family live in the studio and the lineup for the night was ultra sweet with SP|Otherish, Buddha Supreme, and a 30 minute set from yours truly the night was HONEY. The vibe was on high all night with ultimate track selections. Check back soon for the show playlist.
There was this one particular song that has had me on repeat all weekend. An instant STICKY FLAVOR IT of "Footsteps In The Dark" remixed by King Britt. The track was created for a remix project that Sony did a few years back that was rejected by the label. What in the hell were they thinking?!
